Margie’s Encouraging Laugh
By: Monica Conley, Women’s Coordinator
Boisterous laughter fills the first floor as I round the corner to see Margie and several other residents chatting in the living room recounting funny childhood stories. On any given day, that is what you would hear: Margie’s laughter.
Margie had a variety of roles here at the Mission, but none of them compared to her God given role of encouragement. She just has a way about her that even as a Resident assistant and enforcing the rules of the program, you cant help but feel encouraged by her and how she offers guidance and correction. Margie, like many of the women I see here, came in with some health issues. Some we were able to help her resolve while others we weren’t. Our goal became finding her housing that would help her maintain her independence but also support her with her health.
After 3 years, Margie successfully completed her program at the Mission and moved into her own place that is more conducive to her specific needs and allows her to maintain independence. Within the first week she had her family over and spent the afternoon in the pool with them. She has a good relationship with everyone there, and attributes her ability to learn and adjust to a new schedule from the structure she gained at the Gospel Rescue Mission.
Recently, Margie stopped by the Fikso Family Center for a visit. After some hugs, laughter and tears, we sat down to reminisce about her time at the Mission. Take a listen to Margie’s podcast!
